Analgesic in Pediatric population

Question 1: Can you prescribed NSAIDs to the pediatric patient

Answer

NSAIDS should never being used in pediatric population (below age of 12). Metabolism is mainly by the liver and the liver is not mature enough for pediatric population

There’s been a study that links the usage of Aspirin with Reye’s syndrome.

Reye’s syndrome is a rare disorder occurring in childhood. It is characterized by the symptoms of encephalitis combined with evidence of liver failure.

The only NSAID approved by FDA for children is ibuprofen in the form of syrup. However, basically paracetamol is enough for simple analgesic to children.
