Thrombocytopenia in Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is associated with increase in plasma leakage, thrombocytopenia and bleeding tendency.

Few theory has been proposed for the development of thrombocytopenia in dengue hemorrhagic fever. Among the theory are

1) Dengue virus-induced bone marrow suppression resulting in decrease platelet synthesis.

2) Underlying immunological function

a) Immune complex formation (PAIgG formation involving anti-dengue virus IgG)

b) Overproduction of IL-6 enhanced production of anti-platelet agent

c) phagocytosis by THP 1 cell (Human acute monocytic leukemia cell line)

3) Platelet dysfunction due to release of adenosine diphosphate

4) peripheral sequestration and consumption of platelet
